In September of 2004 we did a bit of touring round Europe in our old 205. As we went round Mel scribbled down where we'd been each day, that's basically what follows. A European atlas will help you follow the route we took, but it's not mandatory ; ) I've added some piccies that we took along the way, click on'em to open a bigger version in a new window. Hover over them to view the caption.

We did 3,600 miles in total, taking in the delights of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy & little old Monaco. Once on the continent we avoided motorways if we could, especially if they were toll ones.

The 205 wasn't too happy about doing the length of the Alps, but she didn't complain & despite being heavily laden still managed to return 54.15 mpg overall (yes, it's a diesel).

Anyway, that's enough small talk, on with the trip.......

Day 1 - Mon 6th - Home to Dover (300 miles)

Set off for Dover at 7pm to catch the 2am ferry. Made good time (4 3/4 hours), they said we could go on the earlier one at 0.15am instead. Got off ferry & headed East towards Dunkirk, pulled up at first rest place on the m/way & kipped in the car for the night.

Day 2 - Tue 7th - Calais (France) to Zell (Mosel/Germany) (382 miles)

Headed SE on the m/way past Lille, entered Belgium & past Charleroi. Headed South at Namur then got off m/way & went SE to Bastogne. Entered Luxembourg passing through Ettelbruck & Echternach. Entered Germany, passed through Trier, then up the Mosel valley to Zell.

After a long days drive it was getting dusk as we pitched tent at the camp site next to the Mosel river.

Day 3 - Wed 8th - Zell (Mosel/Germany) (59 miles)

Called at my friend Stefan's house, no one in.

Drove along the valley to Cochem, drove into hills behind & then dropped back into it. Had a lazy day by the river eating, drinking, swimming in river (Bilko), & exploring town.

Called in at Stefan's on way back, his wife informed us he was in the UK for the week! Spoke to him on the phone, he was watching motor racing at Brands Hatch.

Day 4 - Thurs 9th - Zell (Mosel/Germany) to Bacharach (Rhine/Germany) (112 miles)

Headed up towards the end of the Mosel making a diversion to see a castle called Burg Eltz. Had to park the car & then walk up a hill, as you start to drop into the valley you get an amazing view of the castle on a little rock hillock thing nestled in a valley. Very steep walk down & back up. We liked the castle, Bilko liked the river.

Carried on to Koblenz, where the Mosel meets the Rhine. Then headed South to Boppard, spent an hour walking round there, it was very busy as it was market day. Followed the Rhine South & pitched camp at Bacharach. Very noisy night, railway line both sides of the river, boats on the river, camp site next to busy road.

Day 5 - Fri 10th - Bacharach (Rhine/Germany) to Freudenstadt (Black Forest/Germany) (162 miles)

Followed Rhine as far down as Bingen, then got on m/way to Karlsruhe. Entered Black Forest near Ettlingen. Drove round the Black Forest a bit passing Bad Herrenalb, Engelsbrand & finishing up at Freudenstadt for a walk round. Bilko liked the fountains that came up out of the floor on a large paved area ; )

Found a camp site 5 miles East of Freudenstadt near Dornstetten, the best one yet. It had a swimming pool & even a shower for dogs. Bilko wasn't keen on us swimming without her, we took it in turns to swim whilst the other stopped her from barking. Instead of a swim we gave her a shower as she was very smelly from all the rivers she'd been in.

Day 6 - Sat 11th - Freudenstadt (Black Forest/Germany) to Soll (Austria) (256 miles)

Start of a long days drive to Austria. Got on m/way passing Stuttgart, Augsburg, Munchen. Very hot & very heavy traffic, kept slowing right down & sometimes coming to a complete halt for no apparent reason. Headed South at Rosenheim, the Austrian Alps loomed ahead of us. Arrived at Soll & pitched camp at the site at the top of the village.

Went down to the Postwirt (hotel) for evening meal & drinks. Met a couple from Manchester, had a pleasant evening. During the frivolities it started to rain, when we got back to the camp the towels & chairs we'd left out were soaked.

Day 7 - Sun 12th - Soll (Austria) (53 miles)

Went to find our friend Clive at the Manor Haus (apartments) where he was partner, he's not around but Arthur gives us his number.

As it's still raining we decide to drive around the SkiWelt area, visiting the villages we've seen or skied down to. Past Scheffau, Ellmau & onto Kitzbuhel. Had a rainy walk round Kitzbuhel, as it was Sunday all the expensive shops were shut (insert sigh of relief here). Carried on around past Brixen & called in at Westendorf for some lunch. Had a lovely portion of Tiroler Groestl at a nice restaurant we found. Carried on past Hopfgarten, Itter & finishing up back at Soll.

Called to see Arthur after tea for a couple of drinks, then went to the Salven Stadl (pub) for a few more. Much quieter in there than we're used to. Arthur & a couple of girls came in later & join us for a few Sturms (fermenting grape juice).

Day 8 - Mon 13th - Soll (Austria) (17 miles)

As it was a lovely sunny day we decided to get the cable cars to the top of the Hohe Salve (1829m) & walk back down the mountain to Soll (703m). Views from the top were breathtaking, we're only used to seeing it full of snow. Took us about 4 hours with stoppages for eating, dog swimming, etc. Our legs were a bit achy by the time we reached the bottom, Bilko was fine despite the fact she'd managed to electrocute herself on a cattle fence.

Went to Ellmau for a walk round in the evening. Returned to the Postwirt for a few drinks & met up with the couple from Manchester again. By the end of the night, legs feeling a bit more achy.

Day 9 - Tue 14th - Soll (Austria) to St. Moritz (Switzerland) (182 miles)

We decided to follow the alps, so we set off West along the valley towards Switzerland, going through Innsbruck & heading South at Landeck towards the border near Pfunds. Once past the border we headed up a narrow valley with seriously steeps sides, one little road glued to each side, amazing. Followed the river Engadin for the rest of the day, an amazing green river. Camped a few km outside of St. Moritz in a pine covered site next to a river, started raining just before we got there, rained all night.

After sitting in the car most of the day I could hardly walk when I got out, my legs had really stiffened up from the day before. Looked across at Mel, she was hobbling too ; )

In the evening we went for a drive into St. Moritz. Went up & down most of the roads but couldn't see much in the dark & rain.

Day 10 - Wed 15th - St. Moritz (Switzerland) to Brig (Switzerland) (192 miles)

It had stopped raining but everything was very wet. Headed through St. Moritz & had a look at the lake in the daylight.

Headed SW to lake Como (Italy) dropping down from the mountains on some wiggly roads (we'd get used to these over the next few days). Had lunch on West coast at Menaggio then headed for Lugano (Switzerland). Picked this road thinking it'd avoid any traffic, unfortunately it passed through villages that had roads through them that were wide enough for 2 cars max (no pavements). So got held up for 20 mins at one village coz of lorries battling to get through. Headed North through Locarno, got on an extremely wiggly road to Domodossola (Italy). Then back into Switzerland over the Simplon pass. The sun was low by the time we started up the pass, brilliant views, no traffic at all, 2005m high, brill! Getting dark as we dropped back into civilisation, camped at a closed camp site. Spent the evening in the adjoining pub before retiring to the tent.

Day 11 - Thur 16th - Brig (Switzerland) to La Chambre (France) (200 miles)

Headed West along valley past Sion, at Martigny headed SW over the Col de la Forclaz (1527m) going into France. Headed down to Chamonix, suddenly spotted Mont Blanc (4807m) in the distance, the highest point in Western Europe. As we got closer we could see the glacier coming way down towards Chamonix. An amazing snow capped mountain, an amazing sight!

After lunch in Chamonix we headed South to Mont Blanc tunnel. Nearly had a heart attack when the bloke in the toll booth asked for €30! The tunnel is 7 miles long & emerges in Italy. Dropped back into a valley & then climbed back out up the Col du Petit St. Bernard (2188m). Back into France at the top, long decent finally ending up in Moutiers. Treated ourselves to 4 miles of motorway, ahhhhh, a straight road ; ) Headed off over the Col de la Madeleine (1984m), as this was one of the Col's the Tour De France went over this year there were plenty of names & stuff painted on the road during our descent. God knows how they ride up these mountains at the speed they do?! At the bottom we found a camp site at La Chambre, it was the skankiest site of the holiday.

Day 12 - Fri 17th - La Chambre (France) to Tende (France) (237 miles)

Set off South for the Col de la Croix de Fer (2067m), the main route was closed so we had to follow a diversion that took us up a very narrow extra wiggly road! On the descent of the Col du Glandon we found a beautiful green damned lake which fed the hydro electric place at the bottom of the mountain. Saw quite a few cyclists struggling up past us trying out a Tour road ; )

Once in the valley we went South heading for Bourg-d'Oisans (720m) near the start of the climb to L'Alpe d'Huez (1860m), one of the most famous Tour climbs. It's 8 miles long & has 21 hair pins, I was surprised at just how steep it was, despite having seen it on the TV plenty of times over the years. The road, which has loads of painted names etc, had a hell of a lot of cyclists on it trying to reach the top on a pretty hot day. I got talking to a couple of extremely fit looking guys (athletic wise) at the bottom who were getting ready to ride up. I asked how long it took them, one said 67 mins. It took me 21 mins in the car. In the Tour this year it took Lance Armstrong 39 mins!!!!!! And remember that he started at Bourg-d'Oisans which is another 1.5 miles away from the actual start of the climb.

Had a picnic lunch at the village at the top looking at the village way down below. There were loads of grasshoppers around & Bilko invented a new game called 'catch the jumpy thing' ; )

Once back down we went SE over the Col du Galibier (2645m) heading for Briancon, then South, then up & over the Col de Vars (2109m). At St. Paul we decided to head East into Italy on some main roads avoiding any more Cols (Cols = v.steep & v.wiggly), the road turned out to be another Col anyway. Headed towards Cuneo & then South towards Tende, re-entering France. It was at this point that we finally left the Alps behind us! Most people just go over them, we'd gone along them : ) Found a nice camp site after Tende, Bilko enjoyed the adjacent river.

Day 13 - Sat 18th - Tende (France) to Le Cap d'Agde (France) (318 miles)

Up early, about 7'ish, hoping to get into Monaco early. Headed off South to Ventimiglia (Italy), then followed the coast road back into France & then Monaco. Dropped down into Monaco to find it heaving with cars & mopeds, you need the windows down to hear the mopeds approaching from behind on both sides, not just because of the heat. Eventually recognised one of the roads as being part of the track & gave Mel a guided tour until we came to an abrupt halt at the harbour where it was all blocked off due to some show or exhibition. Headed back into the centre & was lucky enough to see a gap to park in. Had a wander round the place, wasn't too impressed, it was market day & was a bit scruffy & smelly, not what I was expecting.

Left the driving madness behind & headed onto Nice & then Cannes. Had lunch at Cannes sat on a pier, Bilko wasn't impressed as we didn't let her in the Med, despite it being pretty damn hot. Carried on across the Cote d'Azur heading for Montpellier, managed to successfully negotiate the ring road & finally reached Le Cap d'Agde at dusk.

Found the camp site we planned to stay at (the only bit of forward planning on the trip). We'd been using the small 2 man tent up until this point, which is quick & easy to put up. As this was the hitting the beach & relaxing bit of the trip it was time to erect the big tent, which takes at least 30 minutes when you can see properly, as opposed to using the car headlights & a torch.

The camp had a load of boy racers on it who were attending a local car tuning rally that was taking place in the area that weekend. Cars could be heard doing burn outs with the engines bouncing off the rev limiters until 4am in the distance, our resident camp site boy racers started driving their cars round the camp at 7am. Needless to say, it wasn't the best nights sleep we'd had.

Day 14 - Sun 19th - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (6 miles)

Next morning it wasn't long before I realised that due to a cock up in town plan reading the evening before, we'd managed to set up camp on the wrong site!!! It was about this point that I started feeling glad I'd put the big tent up the night before. Went to check the other site was open/existed before stuffing everything back in the car & moving to the other place.

Went to the beach, which was a stones throw from the tent. Bilko loved the sea, chased her rugby ball in & out for ages. She didn't even mind me holding on to her tail while she was swimming & using her as a pretend dolphin : ) Couldn't settle down to sunbathe properly coz of the dog shouting (barking) to be let off the lead & back in the sea. So finished up lounging around near the tent & taking her back to the beach for 3 swims a day.

Day 15 - Mon 20th - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (0 miles)

Chilled out again enjoying the sea, beach & weather. Had a quick walk to the centre to see if the cash machine was working yet. It wasn't, so I went into the bank & asked the bloke if there was any way of getting some cash, there wasn't until the machine was fixed apparently.

Dog completely worn out by evening, so left her asleep in the car while we walked to the centre/harbour area. The cash machine still wasn't working & we only had €4 left by now, so we eventually finished up going back to the tent & breaking out the emergency warm beers.

Day 16 - Tue 21st - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (2 miles)

After Bilko & dads first swim of the day we decide it's time to get some cash (we'd even resort to driving the car if we had to!). We ask one of the women in the camp reception where the nearest machine is, there was a slight language problem but this is roughly how it went. She tell's us it's in the centre, we tell her that it's broke, she tell's us to use the other one just round the corner instead!! Sure enough, there was the other machine, 300m away next to the petrol station. It was about this point that I started feeling a little annoyed with the French tw*t in the bank for being so helpful the day before.

Went & did a bit of shopping for food & stuff before returning to camp to do some more relaxing. Took Bilko down to the beach late afternoon to do some modelling. She's a natural 'Pond Girl' the way she poses for the camera in the sea ; ) Put her to bed in the car again whilst we went out for a meal & cold beers. It was a loud windy night, nothing to do with Mel for once I'm glad to report ; )

Day 17 - Wed 22nd - Le Cap d'Agde (France) to St. Pourcain Sur Sioule (France) (277 miles)

It had been a nice few days but it was time to pack up & head North back to Calais. Headed off on free m/way to Clermont Ferrand, exited m/way just before the toll bit & found a site at St. Pourcain Sur Sioule. This was the cheapest site of the whole trip at only €5.45(!), despite the price it was a lovely site & included a river for Bilko.

Day 18 - Thur 23rd - St. Pourcain Sur Sioule (France) to Etréaupont (France) (317 miles)

Started the day by going to the local vets to get Bilko wormed, ticked & passport stamped ready for the channel crossing the next day. According to Mel the vet was very cute, couldn't see it myself.

Carried on North passing Moulins, Nevers, Auxerre, Troyes, Chalons-en-Champagne & Reims. The weather had drawn in & gotten progressively worse as we drove North that day (ie. approached the UK). It had been raining most of the late afternoon & carried on raining until the early hours, the site was very damp.

A Dutch bloke saw Mel playing with the dog & recognised us from the camp site the night before. Quite surprising considering we'd driven so far & were staying at a camp site in the middle of nowhere.

Day 19 - Fri 24th - Etréaupont (France) to Calais (France) (248 miles)

Packed away a very damp tent for the last time. Headed North entering Belgium at Mons, then to Brussels for a look round. It started raining again half way there, by the time we got there it was hammering down. Tried to get to the centre, but the traffic was solid & it was still bouncing down. So we decided there'd be no point getting to the centre, so headed off for Brugge instead.

Parked in the centre of Brugge & spent a few hours wandering around. It drizzled now & again, but despite the weather it was obvious that it's a beautiful place & worth a proper visit some time.

Went North to Ostende on the coast, then followed the coast road through De Pann, back in to France to Dunkirk, finally arriving at Calais. Had a drive round Calais then went & got on the 9.30pm ferry.

Day 19 (Pt.2) - Fri 24th - Dover to Home (via Sheffield & Snake) (283 miles)

Mel was supposed to be doing the drive home as I'd done all the driving that day, but after a couple of hours we swapped back & I got us home by 2.40am. We'd done 531 miles in total by the end of this slightly extended day.

The End
