In August/September of 2006 we did another bit of touring round Europe. As we went round Mel scribbled down where we'd been each day, that's basically what follows. A European atlas will help you follow the route we took, but it's not mandatory ;-)  I've added some piccies that we took along the way, click on'em to open a bigger version in a new window. Hover over them to view the caption.

We did 2,532 miles in total, taking in the delights of France, Belgium, Luxembourg & Switzerland. Once on the continent we avoided motorways if we could, especially if they were toll ones.

The A170 didn't bat an eyelid & despite being heavily laden still managed to return 49.73 mpg overall.

Anyway, that's enough small talk, on with the trip.......

Day 1 - Tue 22nd August- Home to Dover (282 miles)

Left home, fully laden at 7pm - there were several sections of 40 mph road works on the m/way, so we didn't arrive at Dover until just after midnight.

The ferry was no problem, Bilko is now an experienced sailor.

Arrived in France & set off East to find our favourite sleep over stop on the m/way (ie. slept in the car).

Day 2 - Wed 23rd - Calais (France) to Corny-sur-Moselle (France) (314 miles)

Up & ready to go, all suffering with stiff necks & achy bones from awkward sleeping positions, can't wait for the luxury of our sleeping mats.

We travelled into Belgium & headed SE towards Luxembourg.....I still think it's a long way to go for cheap diesel.....ah well!! Once in Luxembourg we headed South, back into France.

Just South of Metz we found a campsite at Corny-sur-Moselle, with a grumpy French camp attendant. Apart from the attendant, the camp was nice & was next to the Moselle. Had a nice tea, a few beers & an early night.

Day 3 - Thurs 24th - Corny-sur-Moselle (France) to Vallorbe (Switzerland) (229 miles)

Carried on South towards Switzerland driving through Nancy, Epinal, Vesoul & Besançon. We finished up at Vallorbe just over the Swiss border. Found a lovely campsite with a friendly Swiss lady, and was even issued with free tea bags!!

After a quick wander we spent the evening at the camp, had a few more beers & a game of football. Generally chilled out.

Day 4 - Fri 25th - Vallorbe (Switzerland) (0 miles)

Went for a lovely walk over the local hills to Du Pont, a picturesque village nestled on the edge of Lake Joux. Really good signage on the way, didn't get lost once!! Followed the relatively flat railway/road route back down to Vallorbe.

After our 5 hour walk we needed pampering, so went out for tea, big pizzas! Left Bilko chilling out in the car.

Day 5 - Sat 26th - Vallorbe (Switzerland) to Chamonix (France) (109 miles)

Drove East to Orbe then SW to Geneve. Had a quick wander around, took pictures of some fountainy, water shooty thing that Stew remembers from an old TV show.....'The Champions' or something. The lake is officially called Lac Léman nowadays, but us Brits refer to it as Lake Geneva.

Continued on towards Chamonix, which sits just below Mont Blanc. Found a great campsite just through Chamonix at Les Praz, managed to get the tent & tarpaulin shelter up before the heavens opened. The rain continued through the evening & night. Had a few beers by the tent, as the night got colder we retired to the buvette (log cabin shelter) to drink a few more alcoholic beverages & read.

Day 6 - Sun 27th - Chamonix (France) (5 miles)

Woke to a dry morning, although the mountains were still covered in cloud.

Walked into Chamonix town centre & checked out the Aiguille du Midi cable car that goes up Mont Blanc. As it cost about £58 per person to use it once(!) (& dogs weren't allowed), we decided not to bother & took the cable car on the other side of town up to Plan Praz (2000m). We then walked along the mountains opposite Mont Blanc to the top of Flégère lift (1894m). Stopped for a hot choc, then walked down to Les Praz, a very steep drop of 900m. OUCH!!....sore knees & clown feet by the time we got back to the tent!!!

Clouds didn't clear much all day, so the views weren't great.

Had a huge tea & drove into Chamonix for a walk round & a drink or three.

Day 7 - Mon 28th - Chamonix (France) to Bozel (France) (102 miles)

Cloudy morning but dry, decided not to go up the mountain railway as the view would be of clouds & not much else. Packed up & headed SW through St. Gervais-les-Bains, Albertville & then SE to Moûtier. This is the base of the Three Valley's ski area, so we thought we'd check it out. Went up to Méribel (1,400m) to have a look around, then back down to Bozel, passing the entrance to the Courchevel valley on the way. It had been a very wet day.

Set up camp in Bozel. The campsite was empty, only a couple of other campers on a large site. Getting good at setting up camp & tarpaulin shelter just in time for the heavens to open.

We were surprised to be given an emergency evacuation plan (and water wings) just in case of a flash flood. The site was on a steep slope that had a large river at the bottom. Slept well.......NOT!

Day 8 - Tue 29th - Bozel (France) (43 miles)

Sunny morning, headed off towards the Three Valley's......the wrong way! Got to Pralognan-la-Vanoise, then retraced steps back through Bozel then up the Courchevel valley.

Arrived at La Praz (aka. Courchevel 1300). Could see the scary looking olympic ski jump, albeit bereft of snow, which was used in 1992. Continued up to Courchevel 1650 then onto Courchevel 1850. The weather was now drawing in again, we stopped in a picnic area to rustle up some noodles.

We got a gondola up to Verdons, the weather really closed in & we could see very little. We then got the cable car up to La Saulire (2,740m), we could see absolutely nothing except clouds!! Strangely I complained it was too wet & didn't want to walk down, so we decided to head straight back down again using the lifts.

Headed home & had a rainy night on camp. The river seemed louder!

Day 9 - Wed 30th - Bozel (France) to Châtillion-en-Diois (France) (151 miles)

It was a sunny day, we were up bright'n'early & packed ready to go by 8.30am. We headed back through Moûtier & then headed SW over the Col de la Madeleine (1,984m), the Col du Glandon (1,951m), the Col d'Ornon (1,367m), the Col de la Croix Haute (1,176m) & the Col de Grimone (1,318m). We then passed through some brilliant rock formations with road tunnels running through them, it was amazing.

I was feeling a bit tired, so we decided to set up camp at Châtillion-en-Diois. The camp had a river, so Bilko was happy.......until the wash'n'go bottle came out & she was lathered up that is!!

Went for a stroll around the village, village shut! Had fish & chips for tea at the small snack bar on camp.

Day 10 - Thurs 31st - Châtillion-en-Diois (France) to Bagnols-sur-Cèze (France) (132 miles)

Woke up to a glorious sunny morning, had breakfast, packed up & headed off to Die!! We were heading for the Ardeche region, so went through Die & Montéllimar then South before heading West to Vallon-Pont-d'Arc. Had a wander around the village & also an ice cream.... about time!!

Headed SE down towards the spectacular Gorges de l'Ardeche. This was amazing. Soon reached the famous Pont d'Arc. Bilko insisted we stop & have a swim through the natural arch & dragged her dad along for a swim too.

On the return leg Stew climbed out onto some rocks, then threw my little pup 9ft into the water!! She begged him to do it apparently....I've reported him to the RSPCA!

Left there & carried on along the rest of the Gorges de l'Ardeche, it was like a mini Grand Canyon. After that we looked for somewhere to camp, Bagnols-sur-Cèze fitted the bill nicely.

Day 11 - Fri 1st Sept - Bagnols-sur-Cèze (France) to Le Cap d'Agde (France) (113 miles)

Got up & set off through Nimes, decided we didn't want to see Roman ruins & carried on to Montpellier. Managed to successfully negotiate the ring road successfully again. Went through Sète then arrived at Le Cap d'Agde. Set up camp in the sunshine!!

Day 12 - Sat 2nd - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (0 miles)

Woke up to a misty morning, the sun was hidden in the haze, it didn't quite manage to burn through, but still a lovely warm lazy day.

Day 13 - Sun 3rd - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (0 miles)

Very hot lazy day. As dusk approached so did the sea mist.

Day 14 - Mon 4th - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (11 miles)

Very hot again. Went to Agde to get some petrol for the stove & a wander round a massive supermarket, but got chucked out coz I was wearing a bikini top. Returned to camp for more sun bathing & swimming. Mist came down again at dusk.

Day 15 - Tue 5th - Le Cap d'Agde (France) (0 miles)

Another scorcher. The mist started to come down just as we took the camera down the beach to get some photos.

Day 16 - Wed 6th - Le Cap d'Agde (France) to St. Pourcain Sur Sioule (France) (260 miles)

T'was another misty morning, it didn't look like it would clear.

It was our day to head for home, so we packed up & headed off. We called in at that supermarket again for supplies, making sure we had plenty of layers on before entering ;-) We followed the same route North as the previous Eurotrip on the free motorways.

The Millau bridge had been built since our last visit. So we decided that we would pay the toll for the 1st time ever!!! ¢5.10 got us over the bridge. The modern bridge, Stew informs me, is a feet of modern engineering & is the tallest bridge in the world, standing at an impressive 343m (taller than the Eiffel tower!). According to Stew, they built the towers first, then slid the roadway across from each side before adding the superstructure. Must admit it was amazing. Also saved us 30 minutes driving down to & through Millau.

Headed for Clermont Ferrand then on to St. Pourcain Sur Sioule for the evening. Finished up on a different camp site than the last time we were there. Had tea & went for a stroll before settling in for the night.

Day 17 - Thurs 7th - St. Pourcain Sur Sioule (France) to Etréaupont (France) (306 miles)

Took Bilko to the local vets to get her wormed, ticked & passport stamped ready for the channel crossing the next day. I was a bit down in the dumps, as the vet that I had the hots for on our previous visit was nowhere to be seen :-(

Set off North passing Moulins, Nevers, Auxerre, Troyes, Châlons-en-Champagne & Reims before stopping at Etréaupont. It had been a long drive that day, so after setting up camp we let Bilko play in the river until she got fed up (ie. quite a while). It was be her last swim of the holiday after all :-)

Day 18 - Fri 8th - Etréaupont (France) to Calais (France) (195 miles)

Set off in a NW direction for the coast passing through Laon, Amiens, Abbeville & Boulogne-sur-Mer. Had a nosy round Boulogne before heading on towards Calais. We stopped off at the huge Cité Europe shopping centre place just before we got to Calais to stock up on a few last minute beers, wines, etc.

We arrived in Calais in plenty of time, so had a good walk round the place this time. Relaxed at a bar & had our last beers of the holiday. Topped up the diesel before getting on the ferry.

Day 18 (Pt.2) - Fri 8th - Dover to Home (280 miles)

Stew had driven all day, so I took the wheel for the last leg home & got us all back safely.

The End

Eurotrip #3 coming soon!!
