Kimberley - January 2011
Some piccies & a movie from Kimberley Alpine Resort (Canada)
We stayed at the Trickle Creek Lodge, it's right at the base of the hill so is ski-in/ski-out, the main lift was about 30m away. It was a really nice hotel & we even got free breakfasts included as part of the last minute deal. The room was pretty big with a bathroom, a bedroom (with massive bed), a lounge with a full kitchen at one end & balcony at the other. The resort itself is very quiet with nothing going on at night once the après-ski pub shuts at 6pm. There's a Kelsey's restaurant/pub built into the hotel that's open all evening, but that's quiet too. We caught the shuttle bus down to Kimberley town 3 nights to eat & drink down there with the locals. They stopped the bus early on the Saturday evening because the snow was getting a bit heavy for it (the driver did warn us that might happen), we decided we'd hitch back rather than sussing out the taxis. We walked 250m to the edge of town where the road can only go up to the resort, 30 secs later a 4*4 approached so we stuck our thumbs out, they stopped & gave us a lift to the door of our hotel, a very friendly lot the Canadians :-)
The first day was sunny followed by an overcast one, then on the Saturday it never stopped snowing all day & night, Sunday was misty & sunny, the last 2 days were ultra sunny but it was -24C (ie. bbbrrrrrr). We had 12 inches of snow on the Saturday/early hours Sunday.
Kimberley Alpine Resort (1,230m) is in British Columbia's Rockies. It's a purpose built resort, a mile or two up the road from the town of Kimberley. Although it's not big, they certainly have a lot of good skiing in a small compact area. It has 750m vertcal & nearly all the runs are bordered by trees. Kimberley town has a main street that has numerous Austro-Bavarian themed restaurants, which we thought rather bizarre ;-)
